Mr. Mugabo Gilbert, the Vice Mayor of Muhanga District in charge of Social Affairs, has once again emphasized the importance of saving for the future to ensure a comfortable old age.
His remarks were made on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, during a discussion on the well-being of the elderly.

The discussion was organized by the Sazana Ishema Aging Center (SIAC) in collaboration with religious organizations and denominations. The event was attended by a diverse group of participants, including representatives from government agencies, religious leaders, representatives from eight universities operating in Rwanda, partners, and others.
In his address, Mr. Mugabo urged the youth and others to effectively utilize their current resources to ensure a dignified old age. He reiterated the importance of saving early to secure a comfortable retirement.

He advised the younger generation, stating, “You must save for the future to ensure a good old age. Planning for a dignified old age begins now, not when you are old and no longer able to save.”
Mr. Mugabo also commended the role of SIAC in supporting the elderly. He noted, “SIAC contributes significantly to national well-being by bringing together the elderly and the youth, facilitating the transfer of valuable Rwandan cultural heritage from those who have lived long lives to the younger generation.”
Building on this, he emphasized the need for youth to cultivate self-confidence and avoid negative narratives about aging. Research indicates that constantly expressing pessimism about aging can shorten one’s lifespan by up to 7.5 years. Studies have shown that fear of aging and related anxieties can significantly reduce one’s life expectancy.
Currently, SIAC operates in various areas of Muhanga District, including Nyarusange, Nyabinoni, Kibangu, Nyamabuye, and others. In Nyarusange, the organization works with approximately 405 individuals grouped into 23 communities based on their localities. Their activities primarily focus on traditional crafts and preserving historical artifacts to educate the youth about their heritage.

Through these efforts, SIAC is making a vital contribution to both preserving cultural heritage and enhancing the well-being of Rwanda’s elderly population.
