On Wednesday, November 27, a cohort of Rwandan environmental journalists concluded an intensive three-day training at Hôtel Saint-André Kabgayi, Muhanga.
Supported by the Fojo Media Institute, the Rwanda Environmental Journalists organized this workshop to bring together professional journalists and journalism students.
The training aimed to equip participants with advanced digital media skills, emphasizing practical approaches to using smartphones and digital platforms for impactful environmental storytelling and advocacy.
Participants learned how to produce compelling photos and videos, tools that can convey environmental messages more effectively than traditional text-based stories.
As multimedia content often resonates faster with audiences, journalists were encouraged to harness platforms like X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook to disseminate information that spurs public awareness and action.
“In today’s digital age, visuals are far more engaging than lengthy texts. Through this training, we realized the power of graphics and short videos in inspiring societal change,” shared Ineza Umutoni Nadia, a journalism student at the University of Rwanda’s Huye campus.
She highlighted how tools like smartphones can transform storytelling, saying, “I now focus on creating impactful graphics that educate about the environment because people don’t have time to read long stories.”
The urgency of environmental advocacy was underscored throughout the workshop.
S. Daddy Rubangura, Executive Director of Rwanda Environmental Journalists, emphasized the role of media professionals in addressing pressing issues such as climate change, air pollution, and plastic waste.
“Journalists have the power to influence change. Instead of wasting time on trivial content, we are teaching them how to use their platforms to educate and empower communities to combat air pollution, erosion, and other environmental challenges,” Rubangura explained.
The workshop not only equipped journalists with technical expertise but also inspired them to become champions of environmental preservation.
As Rubangura aptly stated, “The fight against environmental degradation begins with awareness. Journalists are our allies in this battle, using their platforms to create a sustainable future for all.”

The training concluded with a visit to the Rwanda Broadcasting Agency (RBA), a leader in digital media innovation. This immersive experience allowed participants to witness how cutting-edge tools and techniques are applied in a professional newsroom, further enriching their newfound skills.
