On the evening of Friday, February 7, 2025, the Institut Catholique de Kabgayi (ICK) community gathered for a vibrant celebration showcasing the diverse talents of its students.
Dubbed ICK Talent Day, the event was organized by the Association Générale des Étudiants (AGE-ICK).
In the presence of Father Prof. Fidèle Dushimimana, the Vice-Chancellor of ICK, Father. Dr. Prudence Bicamumpaka, the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academics and Research, along with faculty deans, HoDs, lecturers, and students, participants exhibited an impressive array of talents.
The evening featured musical performances, contemporary and traditional dances, poetry recitals, fashion showcases, and more.
Father Prof. Fidèle Dushimimana expressed his admiration for the wealth of talent within the ICK student body, emphasizing the importance of fostering such creativity.
“We have witnessed exceptional singing, an outstanding performance by our traditional dance troupe, and an overwhelming display of artistic skill. We aspire for these talents to be nurtured beyond this event and to become a permanent part of our institution, extending even to graduation ceremonies,” he remarked.

Additionally, Father Prof. Dushimimana commended the students’ linguistic proficiency.
“I had my doubts about whether our students were truly mastering the languages they study. However, tonight has provided undeniable proof—their command of Kinyarwanda, English, Swahili, and French is remarkable. This has truly reassured me,” he added.
Encouraging students to leverage their talents for personal growth and the greater good, he stated, “Talent flourishes through consistent use. It should not merely serve personal gain but should be harnessed to uplift others and, ultimately, to glorify God.”
Responding to students’ requests for ICK Talent Day to become an annual event, he assured them of the administration’s unwavering support.
“I fully endorse the idea of hosting this event multiple times a year. We will identify suitable periods, both mid-year and at the end of the academic calendar, to ensure a balanced integration of academics, entertainment, and talent appreciation. A well-rounded education fosters mental, emotional, and professional well-being,” he affirmed.
A day Joy and Unity
The event left students and staff elated, with many expressing their appreciation for the initiative.
Jeanne Uwineza, Dean of students at ICK, lauded the occasion, “What a spectacular event! Instead of students spending their free time elsewhere, we will now organize more engaging activities like this one to enrich their campus experience.”
She further emphasized the importance of unity among students. “Our aim is to cultivate a strong sense of community where students collaborate both academically and socially for a holistic educational experience,” she added.
Kanangire Pierre, the Guild President of AGE-ICK, expressed satisfaction with the event’s success.
“As students and youth, it is essential to have moments of entertainment, self-discovery, and value-building. This event facilitated deeper connections among students and fostered new friendships,” he remarked.
Diane Birindabagabo, a second-year midwifery student, echoed this sentiment, “This was an excellent opportunity to meet and connect with a diverse group of people. I am grateful for the new friendships I have made.”
Cyprien Mbonimana, an education student, also emphasized the event’s significance.
“This day was highly necessary. We discovered an incredible number of students with unique talents, from dancers to comedians. The organization of this event was invaluable,” he stated.
The Role of Recreation in Student Development
Speaking to ICK News, Dr. Marie Paul Dusingize, the Dean of Faculty of Social, Economic Sciences, and Business Management at ICK, highlighted the importance of recreation in students’ well-being.
“Recreational activities are crucial for holistic development, particularly for young people. They promote relaxation, enhance cognitive growth, and contribute to overall well-being. This is why students should not be confined to classrooms all day but should have moments of mental rejuvenation,” she explained.
She further cited recent research indicating that excessive workload and stress contribute to mental health issues.
“It is imperative that both students and faculty find time to unwind. Events like ICK Talent Day provide much-needed relief and should be prioritized,” she emphasized.
Currently, ICK has a student population of over 4,000 enrolled in various programs, including Journalism and Communication Studies, Nursing and Midwifery, Education, Social, Economic Sciences, and Business Management, Rural and Urban Development, Environmental Management, as well as Post Graduate in Education.
