Senate Elections Scheduled for September 2024

A Presidential decree issued on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, has confirmed that the Senate elections will take place in September 2024.

The decree, published in the official government gazette, specifies that the campaign period will begin on August 26 and end on Saturday, September 14, 2024.

Elections for the senators representing the provinces and the City of Kigali are scheduled for Monday, September 16. On September 17, one senator from public higher education institutions and one senator from private higher education institutions will be elected.

The previous Senate elections were held on September 16 and 17, 2019, and the current senators were sworn in for a five-year term on October 10, 2019. This term is renewable once.

However, the Presidential decree notes that former Heads of State who become senators do not have a fixed term, as stipulated by the Constitution of the Republic of Rwanda.

The Senate is composed of 26 senators: 12 elected to represent the country’s four provinces and the City of Kigali, eight appointed by the President of the Republic, four appointed by the Forum of Political Organizations, and two representing public and private higher education institutions.
