In a busy world where people are required to stay focused on various tasks to ensure their work goes well, some might wonder, “What can I do to take care of my eyes for the long term?”
Dr. Elie Nziyomaze, who completed his General Medicine degree in 2017 and specialized in Ophthalmology until 2023, emphasizes the importance of eye care by stating, “Our eyes allow us to enjoy our surroundings.”

There are many ways to protect your eyes, including the “20-20-20 rule,” as highlighted by Dr. Nziyomaze, an eye specialist at Kabgayi Eye Unit.
He explains that everyone, regardless of their work, needs to “look at something 20 meters away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes.”
This advice stems from the fact that much of today’s work involves technology, where many people spend extended periods on computers, phones, and other devices that can emit harmful rays to the eyes.
He states, “Spending a long time on these technological devices is not good for the eyes. If your job requires you to spend extended periods in front of screens, you should consult an eye doctor to learn how to do your work effectively while protecting your eyes.”
Dr. Nziyomaze further explains that protecting your eyes also involves dispelling misconceptions about eye health and potential diseases.
He says, “Some people refuse to seek medical attention for eye issues, assuming it’s because of old age. In reality, any eye condition can be treated regardless of the patient’s age. We advise people to visit an eye doctor to get a proper diagnosis instead of making decisions on their own.”
He adds that people should avoid resorting to traditional remedies or buying over-the-counter medications without a prescription from an eye doctor, as is often the case with some individuals.
“Sometimes, people first turn to traditional healers, then go to the pharmacy, and finally visit an eye doctor. This delayed approach can worsen their condition, making it harder for us to help them even when we try our best.”
Not only does this hinder effective treatment, but it can also result in prolonged recovery or permanent damage.
