Tarmac road construction is underway in Nyarucyamo II Village, Gahogo Cell, in Nyamabuye Sector, marking a significant step toward improved transportation and local development in Muhanga District.
For many years, residents of Nyarucyamo II struggled with rough, muddy roads that became nearly impassable during the rainy season. Movement to markets, schools, and health centers often took longer than necessary, affecting trade and access to essential services. The ongoing construction project is now bringing renewed hope to the community.
Local authorities say the works involve widening and leveling the road as well as installing proper drainage to prevent erosion and flooding. Engineers on-site believe the upgraded road network will last longer and be easier to maintain, reducing long-term costs.
Farmers and small business owners are among those expected to benefit the most. Transporting goods to Muhanga town markets has traditionally been a time-consuming and costly challenge. Once completed, the improved roads will shorten travel time, reduce motorcycle taxi fares, and enable quicker access to buyers.
Local residents say the changes are long overdue. Jérôme Twigirimana, who has lived in Nyarucyamo II for many years, described the difficulties faced in the past.
“These roads were needed for a very long time,” he said. “When it rained, the roads became slippery and dangerous, especially for children going to school. Now, people will move without fear of falling or getting stuck.”
Twigirimana added that the project shows progress and boosts community morale.

Road construction continues in Nyarucyamo II Village as machinery and workers tackle muddy conditions to improve the main access route.
Road rehabilitation in Nyarucyamo II is part of a wider effort across Nyamabuye Sector to strengthen road infrastructure. Speaking to ICK News, the Executive Secretary of Nyamabuye Sector, Jean Claude Nshimiyimana, said improving mobility remains a top priority for the sector and Muhanga District at large.
“These roads are very useful to our citizens,” he said. “They improve movement, allow easier transport of goods, and generally raise the quality of life. Building and maintaining road infrastructure is one of our priorities as a sector.”
According to Nshimiyimana, progress has already been made in nearby areas.
“We started with Ruvumera, where two roads were successfully completed. Now we are focusing on the road in Nyarucyamo II,” he explained.
The sector is also preparing to extend similar works to other locations still facing accessibility challenges, including Gifumba Village.
“We are planning to construct more roads in Gifumba and other areas that need better access,” he said.
As construction continues, residents remain optimistic that better roads will strengthen economic activity, ease access to services, and contribute to the overall development of Nyarucyamo II and surrounding areas.
