Gaseke Primary School in Nyange Sector, Ngororero District, has seen remarkable transformations this year thanks to the construction of new learning spaces and upgraded sanitation facilities completed before the start of 2025-2026 academic year. The improvements, supported by World Vision Rwanda in collaboration with the local community.
For years, some students at Gaseke Primary School studied in aging and overcrowded classrooms that posed safety concerns, especially during rainy weather.
According to school leaders, the three new classrooms constructed under this project have significantly changed the learning experience. They provide brighter, well-ventilated, and more spacious areas where students can study without distraction or fear.

Newly built classrooms are providing a safer and better learning environment for Gaseke Primary School students.
Alongside the new classrooms, the installation of a functional water tap on the school compound has addressed long-standing challenges related to hygiene and access to clean drinking water. Previously, students had to walk a distance to fetch water, resulting in lost learning time and potential health risks.
A major highlight of the development is the construction of modern toilets and a dedicated girls’ hygiene room. Before these facilities were introduced, long queues formed outside a few old latrines, especially during break times. The situation disproportionately affected girls, who often missed lessons due to menstrual hygiene challenges.

Students at Gaseke Primary School now benefit from upgraded, modern toilet facilities.
Head Teacher Christine Mukanyandwi praised the changes, noting that both students and teachers are now more motivated.
“We used to teach in small, broken rooms that leaked when it rained,” she said. “Now our pupils learn in strong, clean classrooms. Attendance has improved, and teachers are happier too.”
However, she emphasized that more support is still needed.
“These buildings have transformed our school, but the number of classrooms is still not enough for all learners. We hope for continued assistance so that every class can learn comfortably.”
Students also described the impact of the upgrades. Bijoux Uwase, a Primary 5 learner, said the girls’ room has helped her stay in school confidently.
“Having a private place for hygiene makes us feel respected. We no longer worry about missing lessons.”

The new girls’ hygiene room helps ensure dignity and comfort during menstrual periods.
Her classmate, Jean Paul Izabayayo, expressed pride in the improved school environment.
“The new classrooms are comfortable, and having clean water makes school better. I feel motivated to come every day.”
Parents in the community say the school’s transformation gives them hope for better education outcomes. Denyse Uwase, whose child is in Primary 2, said: “Those old rooms were unsafe. These new ones assure us that our children are learning in a good place.”
Gaseke Primary School has now 430 students, including 200 boys and 230 girls. School administrators and parents are now looking forward to additional support to expand classrooms further, ensuring that every learner at Gaseke Primary School continues to study in dignity and safety.
