The National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda (NISR) has released the latest Index of Industrial Production (IIP) report for January 2025, highlighting notable growth in the country’s industrial sector.
This monthly index provides insights into the performance of key industrial activities, helping to monitor economic trends and development.
The January 2025 report indicates that the industrial output in Rwanda’s formal sector grew by 7.9 percent compared to January 2024.
This growth follows an annual average increase of 9.4 percent, reflecting positive momentum in various industrial activities.
Among the key sectors contributing to this growth, mining and quarrying recorded a 4.3 percent increase, while the manufacturing sector expanded by 7.1 percent.
Electricity production saw a 4.2 percent rise, and the water and waste management sector experienced a significant 20.0 percent surge.
Within the manufacturing sector, food processing showed remarkable growth of 16.7 percent, followed by a 13.9 percent increase in the manufacturing of beverages and tobacco products.
However, the production of textiles, clothing, and leather goods declined by 8.6 percent, reflecting challenges in this sub-sector. Other notable increases included wood, paper, and printing (15.8 percent), non-metallic mineral products (8.0 percent), and metal products, machinery, and equipment (16.0 percent).
Electricity generation continued its upward trajectory, increasing by 4.2 percent. This steady growth is essential for supporting industrial expansion and ensuring a stable power supply for businesses and households.
The water and waste management sector saw a remarkable 20.0 percent growth, showcasing improvements in essential utilities and waste handling services.
