President Paul Kagame has called on newly sworn-in senators to prioritize citizen engagement to foster inclusive development.
He made this statement today, September 26, during a ceremony welcoming 20 senators who took an oath of office to serve in Rwanda’s Senate for its fourth term, as stipulated by the country’s laws.
Of the newly inducted senators, four were appointed by the President on September 23, 2024.
They join 12 others elected through the National Electoral Commission, representing various decentralized governance structures.
Additionally, two were elected by public and private higher education institutions, and two more were nominated by the coalition of officially recognized political parties in Rwanda.
These new members will join six other senators who have one year remaining in their term before being replaced.
President Kagame emphasized the importance of understanding and addressing citizens’ concerns proactively.
He advised the senators to engage with the public and address their issues before they escalate to social media, avoiding the impression that the country lacks leaders who are attentive to the people’s needs.
In his address, the Head of State underscored the senators’ duties, urging them to collaborate with other government entities and citizens to build a nation that leaves no one behind.
“When addressing national issues, the most important thing is to ensure that no Rwandan is left behind. Every Rwandan should feel included in the solutions to the country’s challenges and should actively participate,” President Kagame stated, highlighting the Senate’s role in the development of all Rwandans.
He further reminded the senators to remain committed to their responsibilities, adding, “This is something we must always remember and remind each other of to continue making progress and avoid regressing in our duties or other goals we aim to achieve.”
The President also cautioned leaders against taking shortcuts, emphasizing the need for transparency in fulfilling their responsibilities to benefit all Rwandans.
The ceremony, held at the Parliamentary Building, also included the election of the Senate Bureau members. Hon. Dr. François Xavier Kalinda was re-elected to lead the Senate for another five-year term.
Hon. Solina Nyirahabimana was elected as Vice President in charge of legal affairs and oversight of government activities, while Hon. Alvera Mukabaramba was re-elected as Vice President responsible for Finance and Personnel.
Upon his re-election, Hon. Dr. François Xavier Kalinda expressed his gratitude to President Kagame and his fellow senators for their continued trust, pledging to uphold the confidence placed in his leadership.
