The historically marginalized people of Nyarutovu village, located in Gitarama Cell, Nyamabuye Sector of Muhanga District, have expressed concerns about their deteriorating homes, particularly during the rainy seasons.
Speaking to ICK News on Monday, September 30, residents shared their struggles, revealing sleepless nights caused by the state of their neglected houses, which remain unrepaired.
Kansilida Mukakarare, one of the affected residents, described how the leaking roofs of her home leave her and her family vulnerable and uncomfortable during the wet season.
“The biggest issue I face is the condition of my house. In June, the village head (Mudugudu) asked me to make bricks for the construction of a new house. I did as requested, but since then, I’ve heard nothing, and I’m still waiting while the bricks sit unused,” she explained.
Mukakarare appealed to district officials for assistance in repairing her house and providing her with blankets to shield her family from the cold.
Similarly, another resident, Priscila Mukandamage, raised concerns about her leaking roof, which prevents her from sleeping whenever it rains.
“I’m grateful to the government for its continued support. They never stop helping us, but I still hope for more assistance, especially with repairing my home and providing me with a blanket, as the leaks make it impossible to rest when it rains,” she said.
In response to these concerns, Muhanga District Vice Mayor, Mugabo Gilbert, acknowledged the issue of leaking roofs in the affected homes and assured that it has been prioritized for repair.
“We have identified those with housing problems and registered them for assistance. When the time comes, they will receive the help they need, and their situation will improve,” he stated.
Despite the challenges, the historically marginalized people of Nyarutovu village expressed appreciation for the ongoing government support through various initiatives like the Vision Umurenge Program (VUP), which provides financial aid to the elderly and other forms of assistance.
