For over three decades, Kabgayi Referral Centre in Eye Care has been a cornerstone of eye treatment and care services in Rwanda.
Recently, ICK News had the privilege to sit down with Dr. Theophile Tuyisabe, the Director of Kabgayi Referral Centre in Eye Care, to explore how their collaborative efforts with other hospitals are extending their reach and enhancing eye care services for communities across the region.
During conversation, Dr. Tuyisabe elaborated on three fundamental approaches by which Kabgayi Eye Unit is enhancing its reach and effectiveness:

“Firstly,” Dr. Tuyisabe emphasized, “we extend our support to Muhanga Health Centers, particularly in areas where eye care services are scarce. Our commitment involves dispatching our doctors to these centers to provide both guidance and hands-on assistance. Through this collaborative effort, we ensure that even the most remote communities have access to top-tier eye care.”
“Secondly,” Dr. Tuyisabe continued, “we actively empower healthcare professionals from district hospitals by imparting knowledge about the latest advancements in eye care. Our goal is to equip these providers with the necessary skills to enhance access to eye care services across diverse regions. We firmly believe in the importance of universal access to quality eye care.”
“Lastly,” Dr. Tuyisabe stressed, “we foster partnerships with other hospitals, irrespective of their size or resources. This collaboration entails supplying essential equipment, conducting comprehensive training sessions, and personally offering assistance when needed. Our hands-on approach underscores our unwavering commitment to ensuring that everyone receives the care they require.”
Dr. Tuyisabe passionately articulated his belief in the transformative impact of collective action, stating, “We don’t simply aim to improve vision; we aspire to enhance lives.” Kabgayi Eye Unit’s collaborative ethos serves as a shining beacon of hope, demonstrating the profound impact that unity can have on healthcare access and outcomes.
