Pope Leo holds meeting with Marco Rubio at the Vatican

Pope Leo XIV held a private meeting with U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio on Thursday morning at the Vatican Apostolic Palace, where the two leaders discussed global conflicts, humanitarian crises, and ongoing efforts to promote peace across several regions of the world.

The meeting, which lasted approximately 45 minutes, marked the second encounter between Pope Leo XIV and Rubio within a year. Their previous meeting took place on May 19, 2025, shortly after the inaugural Mass marking the beginning of Pope Leo XIV’s pontificate. Welcoming the American diplomat with warmth and humor, the Pontiff reportedly remarked, “Almost a year has passed… less ten days,” recalling their earlier encounter.

According to the Holy See Press Office, the discussions were described as “cordial” and reaffirmed the shared commitment of the United States and the Vatican City to maintaining strong bilateral relations. Particular attention was given to countries affected by war, political instability, and humanitarian emergencies, with both sides emphasizing the urgent need to continue working tirelessly for peace.

Several international crises dominated the talks, including conflicts in the Middle East and parts of Africa. The situations in Lebanon and Iran were specifically mentioned among the regions experiencing heightened tensions. Discussions also addressed the situation in Cuba, where concerns over ongoing tensions with the United States and the humanitarian conditions affecting the Cuban population were raised.

Following his audience with the Pope, Rubio met with Cardinal Pietro Parolin and Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, the Vatican’s Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations. The diplomatic exchanges focused on humanitarian initiatives and international efforts aimed at establishing sustainable peace, particularly in the Middle East.

In a statement released by the U.S. State Department, American officials noted that the talks reflected the “strong and enduring partnership” between the United States and the Holy See, especially in promoting religious freedom and humanitarian cooperation.

The visit took place amid heightened international attention surrounding recent remarks made by Donald Trump concerning the Pope. Earlier this week, Pope Leo XIV responded publicly to those criticisms during an appearance at Castel Gandolfo.

Rubio arrived at the Vatican under tight security, accompanied by U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See Brian Burch. His convoy entered the Vatican through the Courtyard of Saint Damasus while helicopters monitored the airspace above Via della Conciliazione.

The meeting concluded with the traditional exchange of gifts. Rubio presented the Pope with a crystal baseball engraved with the seal of the U.S. Department of State, referencing the Pontiff’s well-known appreciation for baseball. In return, Pope Leo XIV offered Rubio a collection of photographs of the Sistine Chapel, a book from the Apostolic Palace audiences, and a wooden olive-wood pen. Presenting the gift, the Pope emphasized the symbolism of the olive tree, describing it as “a tree of peace.”

The encounter underscored the Vatican’s continuing diplomatic engagement in international affairs and highlighted the shared interest of both parties in addressing global instability through dialogue, humanitarian support, and peaceful cooperation.
