The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued an International Health Regulations (IHR) alert, dated January 13, regarding a suspected outbreak of Marburg Virus Disease (MVD) in Tanzania.

The reported cases are concentrated in the Biharamulo and Muleba districts, which are located near the Rwanda-Tanzania border.

Although official confirmation from the Government of Tanzania is still pending, Rwanda has heightened its surveillance measures to ensure the safety of its citizens.

Monitoring activities have been intensified at Points of Entry (POEs) and within nearby communities.

Authorities are also closely tracking and following up on individuals who recently traveled from the affected areas as a precautionary step.

“Rwanda remains vigilant and continues to collaborate with WHO and neighboring countries to monitor the situation,” said Dr. Edson Rwagasore, Division Manager of Public Health Surveillance and Emergency Preparedness and Response at the Rwanda Biomedical Center.

The situation remains under close observation as Rwanda prioritizes proactive measures to protect public health.

Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
