Starting April 29, a group of 22 journalism students from Institut Catholique de Kabgayi (ICK) and Mount Kigali University (MKU) are embarking on a journey to learn about solution journalism, an innovative approach to reporting.

Taking place in Muhanga District from April 29 to May 3, this training program, organized by the Rwanda Media Program with support from Fojo Media Institute, aims to equip participants with the skills needed to create compelling stories that focus on solutions to social problems, rather than just highlighting the issues.

Solution journalism is a newer concept that aims to showcase responses to social problems to inspire positive change. “We are excited to welcome these young minds to this innovative training,” said Sara Assarsson, a trainer “Solution journalism offers a fresh perspective, empowering journalists to uncover innovative solutions and inspire positive change.”

Sara also highlighted the global impact of the training, noting that by learning how to effectively present their stories, the students will have the chance to share their work with international media outlets, amplifying their voices and showcasing the remarkable solutions in their communities.

During the five-day program, participants will dive into the intricacies of solution journalism, honing their research, writing, and storytelling skills. They will study real-life examples, engage in practical exercises, and receive feedback from experienced professionals.

“This training will make a big difference for us,” exclaimed Byiringiro Thierry, a student from ICK. “Not only will we learn how to create compelling stories, but we’ll also gain insights into presenting our work to global platforms, increasing our chances of being heard worldwide.”

Revocata Ineza, a participant from MKU, echoed Thierry’s excitement. “Solution journalism challenges traditional reporting methods, and I’m excited to be part of it. By highlighting solutions, we can inspire hope and drive positive change, both locally and globally.”

As the training wraps up, these aspiring journalists will leave equipped with the tools and confidence to share their solution-oriented stories with international media outlets. By amplifying voices from their communities, they will contribute to a more balanced and constructive narrative in the global media landscape.
