Kabgayi Eye Unit Restores Sight to Hundreds

The Kabgayi Eye Unit, located in Southern Province, Rwanda, has been a beacon of hope for many years, providing treatment for people around the world suffering from blindness and other eye-related issues.

The clinic’s life-changing work has had a profound impact on vulnerable individuals; restoring their sight and helping them regain their place in society.

Life-Changing Testimonies

Among those whose lives have been transformed is Yankurije Berethilide, a resident of Kibilizi Sector in Nyanza District.

She shared her emotional journey with ICK News, recalling the difficulties she faced before her surgery.

“I felt useless and wished to die,” she reflected, recalling the painful days of blindness. However, hearing about Kabgayi Eye Unit’s outreach program filled her with hope. “When I heard they were offering surgeries to help blind people see again, I knew I had to go,” she said.

After her successful procedure, Yankurije regained her sight, which brought overwhelming joy and new opportunities.

“I am happy now. I can see again,” she added with gratitude.

Another inspiring story comes from Seromba Paul, also from Nyanza District. With both a physical disability and blindness, he felt isolated and disconnected from society.
“Before the surgery, I felt like my world had completely finished. I was living in darkness, not just physically, but emotionally as well,” he said.

The surgery performed by Kabgayi Eye Unit allowed Seromba to regain his sight, helping him re-engage with his community.
“After being treated, I now feel important again in my community,” he shared.

Dr. Théophile Tuyisabe, Director of the Kabgayi Eye Hospital, under his leadership, the hospital has focused on providing accessible eye care to people in need, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

“We help those who cannot afford treatment, thanks to the support of donors, the Rwanda Police, and the Rwanda Defense Forces (RDF), with whom we work together day by day. Our focus is on reaching the most vulnerable,” Dr. Tuyisabe explained.

The hospital collaborates with community health workers, who identify individuals with conditions like cataracts and bring them to health centers for treatment.
“We work with community health workers who gather people with eye problems at health centers. Those showing signs of cataracts are then scheduled for treatment,” he added.

The Kabgayi Eye Unit’s success is supported by various partners, including the government, local institutions, and international donors. Together, they ensure that even the most vulnerable Rwandans, who may not have the means to seek specialized care, can access life-changing surgeries.
Dr. Tuyisabe stressed the importance of ongoing collaboration to continue this vital work.
“We can achieve more when we work together. Kabgayi Eye Unit remains open to supporting the vulnerable, regardless of their background,” he urged.

Research conducted by this hospital shows that since it started operating in 1992, it has performed eye surgeries and restored sight on over 623 underprivileged patients, both Rwandans and foreigners. These life-changing interventions have enabled individuals to regain their independence, re-engage with their communities, and rebuild their lives.
