In a major effort to promote public health and early detection of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), Muhanga District launched a two-day health screening campaign on 20–21 November 2025. The initiative focuses on testing for Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and diabetes, and is being carried out in partnership with local health centers and Rwanda Biomedical Center (RBC).
The campaign is ongoing at health centers and community outreach sites, attracting hundreds of residents eager to know their health status. Medical professionals are offering free testing, counseling, and health education, while also advising the public on adopting healthier lifestyles.
“Most of these diseases have no early symptoms. We are encouraging people to get tested even if they feel healthy,” said Florence Uwineza, one of the nurses providing services during the campaign.
Community members expressed appreciation for the initiative. Confiance Uwayo, a worker at the Muhanga bus station, said:
“This campaign is very helpful. Many people cannot afford regular checkups, but today we had the opportunity to know our health status.”
Similarly, Donatha Mukashema from Nyabisindu Village highlighted the importance of early detection:
“Health screening allows us to act early before diseases become serious. It is an important step for our wellbeing.”
The campaign at Muhanga’s Modern Market and other outreach locations is helping residents gain timely access to medical services while also raising awareness about serious conditions. Health officials say such initiatives are crucial for improving community health outcomes and preventing avoidable complications.
According to the Rwanda Vital Statistics Report 2024, non-communicable diseases are becoming an increasing public health burden. The report shows that 64.7% of all death records from health facilities in 2024 contained usable information coded according to the ICD-10 classification. Among these, 47.7% of deaths were caused by NCDs, including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer, metabolic disorders, and mental health conditions.
