UCI Dismisses Rumors of Moving 2025 World Cycling Championship from Rwanda

Cycling’s world governing body, the UCI, has confirmed that it has no plans to move the 2025 Road World Championships away from Rwanda, despite the ongoing conflict in neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo.

Recent media speculation suggested that a contingency plan was being considered due to the offensive led by the M23 rebel group in eastern DR Congo. However, the UCI has dismissed these claims, reaffirming its commitment to holding the event in Rwanda as scheduled from September 21-28, 2025.

In a statement, the UCI emphasized that it is “closely monitoring developments” and assessing any potential impact on the organization of the championships in Kigali. However, it reassured that Rwanda “remains entirely safe for tourism and business”, as the conflict is contained within DR Congo.

“Following the spread of rumours on this subject, the UCI clarifies that no relocation of the 2025 UCI Road World Championships from Rwanda to Switzerland or any other location is planned at this time,” the statement read.

The governing body also expressed its hope for a “swift and peaceful resolution” to the situation, highlighting the unifying role of sports.

“The UCI wishes to emphasise that sport, and cycling in particular, are powerful ambassadors for peace, friendship, and solidarity,” it concluded.

Rwanda is set to become the first African nation to host the prestigious event, marking a historic milestone for the sport on the continent.
