ICK narrowly defeated by EAUR in away friendly match

In a spirited rematch that blended sportsmanship and student solidarity, the Institut Catholique de Kabgayi (ICK) faced off against East African University Rwanda (EAUR) in a friendly football match held on September 27, 2025, at the Nyagatare District Stadium. While the scoreboard read 2-1 in favor of EAUR, the contest told a deeper story of determination, growth, and mutual respect.

The two sides last met in Muhanga, where EAUR delivered a resounding 5-0 defeat to ICK. This time, however, ICK came with renewed energy and intent to redeem themselves. The game kicked off at 11:20 AM with both teams showcasing high levels of competitiveness from the first whistle.

ICK took an early lead in the 13th minute when striker Iradukunda Ellie, wearing jersey number 9, found the net after a well-timed assist from Ndimubano Adolphe. But the visitors’ celebration was short-lived. Only three minutes later, EAUR’s Nkindi Valens capitalized on a defensive lapse to equalize, making it 1-1.

Despite ICK’s sustained pressure and a series of corner kicks, they struggled to convert opportunities into goals. EAUR regained control in the 30th minute when Ishimwe James scored the second goal, giving the home side a 2-1 lead that they held until halftime.

The second half saw ICK dominate possession and push aggressively for an equalizer. In the 50th minute, they came close with a promising chance that narrowly missed the target. They maintained attacking momentum late into the game but failed to beat EAUR’s defense. EAUR, while benefiting from ICK’s turnovers, also couldn’t add to their tally.

Reactions from the field

Following the match, EAUR captain Mutangana Faustin credited their preparation and team unity for the win. “We had been preparing for this game for quite some time. The support from our leadership and our joint commitment made this win possible,” he said.

On the opposing side, ICK captain Ndayishimiye Eric expressed disappointment over missed chances but praised his team’s performance. “We dominated large parts of the game. Unfortunately, we lacked finishing luck. We believe the first goal we conceded involved a handball, but we respect the referee’s decision,” he noted, adding that the team is committed to further training.

Leonce Bisangwa, ICK’s Minister of Sports under AGE-ICK, maintained an optimistic outlook despite the defeat. “Our team played well — we just lacked the luck to finish. We’ll intensify our training, and I assure ICK supporters that next time, we’ll come out victorious,” he stated.

Beyond the scoreline: Strengthening Inter-University Bonds

More than just a football match, the event served as a platform to deepen the relationship between the two universities. Student leaders from both sides used the opportunity to advocate for unity, mutual support, and continued collaboration.

EAUR’s Guild President, David Mugabo, emphasized the significance of such events beyond sports. “This match is proof that our relationship as institutions goes beyond sports. Whether on campus or in life, we should continue supporting and connecting with each other,” he said.

Kanangire Pierre, his counterpart from ICK, added that the match was about health, togetherness, and shared values. “We came to win, but this experience was about more than just the score. I thank our players, fellow leaders, and our university administration for their support,” he said.

Nshimiyimana Aaron, in charge of student affairs at ICK, acknowledged the warm reception from EAUR. “It’s not easy to travel from Muhanga to Nyagatare, but the reception we received was excellent,” he noted.

Dr. Moses Baiikilize, EAUR’s Campus Coordinator, delivered a heartfelt message highlighting the value of teamwork and persistence in sports and life. “This is what we call team spirit. With unity and hard work, you can go far. National players start from matches like these,” he said.

He urged the players not to give up, reminding them that many professionals began with similar grassroots opportunities. “You sacrificed a lot to be here. That speaks volumes about your love for football. Stay on this path. One day, I hope to hear, ‘Remember that player from ICK? Now he plays professionally.’ That’s the dream.”

Jean Claude Nduwayezu, EAUR’s Head of Public Relations, speaking on behalf of the university’s Vice Chancellor, commended ICK for honoring the invitation and encouraged ongoing collaboration.

“It took determination and teamwork to make this happen. Some nearby universities haven’t even played us yet, but you traveled all the way here. Let’s continue to exchange knowledge, not just through football but also academics. In the future, I’d love to see us compete in basketball, volleyball — and involve both genders,” he said.
