On May 3, 2024, in Kigali, journalists, environmental experts, and government officials gathered to mark World Press Freedom Day. The focus was on discussing how the press can play a vital role in promoting sustainability and climate action.
Organized by the Fojo Media Institute under the theme “Rwandan Journalism in the Face of the Global Environmental Crisis,” the event aimed to encourage collaboration between journalists and environmental specialists.

Jean Bosco Rushingabigwi from the Rwanda Government Board kicked off the event by explaining the government’s aim to empower media professionals to report effectively on environmental issues and contribute to Rwanda’s efforts in tackling climate change.
During the event, panel discussions were held with speakers like Edmond Kagire from the Rwanda Media Commission (RMC), Dady Sadiki Rubangura representing Rwanda’s environmental journalists, Jean Claude Habimana from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and Solange Ayanone from the Rwanda Journalist Association.
They delved into the challenges and opportunities in environmental reporting, covering topics such as climate change adaptation, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable development. They also highlighted successful practices from Rwanda and beyond, emphasizing the importance of accurate and timely reporting on environmental issues.
Peacemaker Mbungiramihigo, a Media policy analyst at the Rwanda Governance Board (RGB), reminded journalists of their collective responsibility to educate, inform, and entertain people.

He emphasized the crucial role of journalists in raising public awareness about climate change and urged for collaboration among journalists, partnerships, and regulatory bodies to prioritize accurate reporting.
Events like this highlight the essential role of the press in shaping public opinion and fostering environmental consciousness as Rwanda pursues sustainable development. By bringing together various stakeholders, the event showcased how journalism can be a powerful force for positive change in combating climate change.
