As makeup becomes increasingly popular, Dr. Tuyisabe Theophile, an ophthalmologist and Director of Kabgayi Eye Unit Hospital, warns of the potential dangers of excessive makeup use.
In an exclusive interview, Dr. Theophile shares his concerns about the risks makeup poses and offers advice on how to use it safely.
The skin around the eyes is thinner and more fragile than other areas of the face. It’s rich in nerve endings, making it more susceptible to irritation.
Additionally, the eyes are surrounded by a delicate network of blood vessels that can be easily damaged by harsh products or techniques.
People use makeup for various reasons, including to enhance their physical appearance, boost self-confidence, and conceal skin imperfections.
“Makeup has become a part of our daily lives, and many people use it to feel more attractive and confident,” notes Dr. Theophile. However, he warns that excessive makeup use can have severe consequences for eye health.
“The chemicals and substances used in makeup can irritate the eyes, leading to conditions like conjunctivitis, keratitis, and even blindness,” he cautions.
Some makeup products also contain carcinogenic ingredients that can increase the risk of developing eye cancer.
Dr. Theophile highlights two specific areas of concern: mascara and eyeliner. “Mascara can cause eye irritation, especially if it is not applied correctly or if the person is allergic to the ingredients,” he explains. “Eyeliner, on the other hand, can increase the risk of eye cancer due to the presence of carcinogenic substances like coal tar.”
When using skincare products around the delicate eye area, it’s crucial to do so with caution to avoid irritation and potential damage.
According to dermatologists, the skin around the eyes is ten times thinner and more fragile than the skin on the rest of the face. To use skincare products safely around the eyes, choose products specifically designed for this area that are labeled “fragrance-free” and “hypoallergenic” to minimize the risk of irritation.
When applying products, use a gentle patting motion with your ring finger (the weakest finger) instead of rubbing or pulling, which can cause fine lines and wrinkles. Avoid applying products too close to the lash line or inside the corner of the eye, as this can increase the risk of irritation and inflammation.
By following these simple tips, you can enjoy the benefits of skincare products while keeping your eyes safe and healthy.
With over 15 years of experience in eye care, Dr. Theophile emphasizes the importance of responsible makeup use. “While makeup can be a part of our daily lives, we must prioritize our eye health by using products that are safe and gentle on our skin.”
By taking simple precautions and being aware of the potential risks, we can enjoy the benefits of makeup while protecting our eyes from harm.
