In Muhanga district, young people are seizing the opportunity to transform their futures through the Hanga Hubs project, an initiative aimed at empowering youth to create innovative job opportunities, particularly in the tech sector.
Participants are optimistic that the program will significantly advance their projects while opening doors to potential sponsors and collaborators.
The Hanga Hubs initiative, which operates in four districts—Muhanga, Nyagatare, Rubavu, and Rusizi—is focused on fostering technological innovation.
In Muhanga, the training is hosted at the Institut Catholique de Kabgayi (ICK), where participants receive hands-on guidance to develop critical skills for the digital economy.
Nkundiye Ildephonse, one of the trainees, shared his excitement about the program. “This opportunity to enhance our technology skills is invaluable. It’s not just about learning; it’s about using these skills to refine our projects, which could ultimately attract sponsors and partners,” he said.
Nkundiye also emphasized the importance of mentorship from industry experts, who provide vital guidance on transforming innovative ideas into practical, marketable solutions.
Mukamabano Jeanette, a recent university graduate, expressed how the program has broadened her technological capabilities.
“The training has significantly boosted my tech skills, especially in using platforms like Irembo. Previously, I had to pay for certain services, but now I can manage these tasks on my own,” Mukamabano explained.
She highlighted the program’s role in preparing participants for the job market, offering an alternative path to traditional employment.
Munyensanga Evode who works in Rwanda Information Society Authority (RISA) overseeing the project in Muhanga, elaborated on the structure of the program. The six-month training, which began in June and will run until December 2024, focuses on three core objectives: refining participants’ project ideas, enhancing their skills, and supporting the practical implementation of their projects.
“We are committed to supporting participants beyond the training period. Our goal is to connect them with partners and resources to ensure the long-term success of their projects,” Munyensanga assured.
Funded by the European Commission and implemented by RISA, the Hanga Hubs project is part of a broader effort by the Rwandan Government and the European Union to bolster private sector development and job creation through innovation and incubation hubs. The initiative seeks to address the challenges faced by early-stage tech startups by providing the necessary services, mentorship, and facilities to help them survive and thrive.
By equipping young innovators with the tools and connections they need to turn their ideas into viable businesses, the Hanga Hubs project promises a brighter future for the youth of Muhanga and beyond.
