ICK Outreach: Shaping Students’ Futures Early On

On the second day of the Institut Catholique de Kabgayi (ICK) outreach tour, high school students expressed that the tour was highly beneficial and should have occurred earlier, ideally during their senior 4 year.

The second tour of ICK took place on June 28, 2024, in Muhanga and Ruhango Districts, specifically at College Saint Jean Nyarusange and Groupe Scolaire Indangaburezi.

During an interview with ICK News, students from both schools emphasized that conversations with university representatives are essential for making informed decisions about their university choices.

Now armed with this newfound information, these students are considering ICK among the universities they will apply to after completing high school.

One student remarked, “Talking to university representatives really helps us understand what each school offers; ICK’s presentation gave us insights into their programs and campus life, so it’s definitely on my list now.”

The administrations of both visited schools appreciated ICK’s decision to visit and suggested that such visits should occur regularly, ideally starting before students reach their final year.

Father Sixbert Byingingo, Headteacher at College Saint Jean Nyarusange, said, “We appreciate ICK’s proactive approach in visiting our school. Regular visits starting earlier would greatly benefit our students in making well-informed decisions about their future.”

This sentiment was echoed by Marie Grace Gahongayire, Headmistress at Groupe Scolaire Indangaburezi, who added, “Having ICK visit our school has been invaluable. Starting these engagements before students’ final year ensures they have ample time to plan and choose their academic paths wisely.”

Dr. Emmanuel Nsengiyumva, Dean of the Faculty of Education at ICK, who led the delegation, highlighted the positive reception from the students.

“The enthusiasm and curiosity we observed at both schools today indicate a strong interest in ICK,” he said in an interview with ICK News. “We have been advised to extend our outreach to more schools and to start engaging students from Senior 4, not just Senior 6, to provide them with a broader perspective on their future educational choices.”

The ICK outreach tour aims to increase awareness and attract new students by providing detailed information about the institution’s programs and services.

The feedback from the second day has reinforced the need for regular and earlier engagement with students.

As the outreach tour progresses, ICK plans to visit more schools, continuing to bridge the gap between secondary education and higher learning.
