The Institut Catholique de Kabgayi (ICK) has received official Approval to offer CPA (Certified Public Accountant) and CAT (Certified Accounting Technician) courses.
The Accreditation, granted by Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Rwanda (ICPAR), allows ICK to provide these professional accounting courses on a temporary basis, as confirmed by Father Prof. Fidèle Dushimimana, the ICK’s Vice-Chancellor.
Father Prof. Dushimimana explained that the ICK’s decision to request permission to offer these courses stemmed from a desire to better equip students pursuing finance and accounting degrees with the skills necessary for the job market.
“We wanted to make these courses accessible to our students so they don’t have to travel far to get this valuable training,” he said.
The initiative also aims to support students from surrounding areas who wish to pursue accounting qualifications.
According to Father Prof. Dushimimana, when ICK was granted permission to teach finance and accounting by the Higher Education Council (HEC), the institution was also advised to offer CPA and CAT programs to help graduates more easily find employment.

Dr. Dusingize Marie Paul, the Dean of the Faculty of Social, Economic Sciences and Business Management at ICK, told ICK News that the accreditation falls under the “Bronze” category, which is the entry-level tier for offering CPA and CAT courses.
She explained that as the Institute gains experience and expands its student base, it will be eligible for higher levels of accreditation from ICPAR.
“Bronze is the initial stage, and we’re just getting started. As we progress, enroll more students, and hire more qualified trainers, we will move to higher levels of accreditation,” Dr. Dusingize explained.
With all the basic requirements in place, ICK is now prepared to begin offering the courses, according to Dr. Dusingize.
The CPA and CAT programs are designed for individuals seeking to advance their careers in the accounting profession by gaining practical skills and internationally recognized certification.
Eligibility for the courses includes completing secondary education with strong grades in two key subjects, or meeting the required percentage marks. Additionally, university graduates in fields other than accounting who wish to pursue a professional accounting career, as well as those with prior accounting qualifications or experience, are welcome to apply.
Dr. Dusingize also highlighted that the courses are open to individuals with at least 6 years of experience in accounting career, even if they did not formally study accounting, as well as those with 10 years of experience in the field.
Addressing concerns about the cost of the courses, Dr. Dusingize reassured prospective students that ICK would strive to keep fees affordable. “While these courses may be expensive, their value is unmatched. We will ensure our fees remain reasonable compared to other institutions offering similar programs,” he said.
The strategic location of ICK is expected to make it easier for students from various regions to access the programs.
Dr. Dusingize also emphasized that ICK’s reputation for quality education will ensure that students receive a high standard of training, making them competitive in the job market.
The CPA and CAT courses, which are aimed at individuals wishing to pursue a career in professional accounting, are regulated by ICPAR. Though institutions like ICK offer the courses, the exams are administered by ICPAR, and the certification is recognized internationally.
The official start date for the courses has not yet been announced, but ICK’s administration has confirmed that the programs will begin soon. A specific date will be communicated to the public in the coming weeks.
