Gareth Southgate Steps Down as England Manager after Euro 2024 Final Loss

Gareth Southgate has announced his resignation as England manager following the team’s heartbreaking loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final. Southgate, who has led the national team since 2016, confirmed his decision on Monday 16, July, marking the end of a significant chapter in English football history.

The Three Lions’ defeat in Berlin marked Southgate’s second loss in a Euros final, a bitter pill to swallow for the 53-year-old and his squad. Despite the disappointment, Southgate reflected on his tenure with pride and gratitude in a heartfelt statement.”As a proud Englishman, it has been the honor of my life to play for England and to manage England.

It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all,” Southgate said. “But it’s time for change, and for a new chapter.”

Southgate’s journey with the Football Association (FA) began in 2011, initially working to improve the national team’s fortunes at various levels. His appointment as the England men’s manager in 2016 marked the start of a transformative era. Under his leadership, England reached the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup, the final of Euro 2020, and now, the final of Euro 2024.

The 53-year-old managed 102 matches, achieving 61 wins and only 17 losses during his tenure.
